I'm not much of a fly fisherman. I've got an interest, and a bit of equipment, but haven't really been able to give it the time it deserves. I've done a bit of bank angling for Bass, Crappie, Perch, and Pickerel though, and have an upcoming trip to the Caribbean where I'd like to try my hand at surf fishing for Redfish, Snook, and Tarpon (if the fates allow).I'm prone to bringing the kitchen sink with me, and I wanted this opportunity to try and pare things down to a small sling pack for the trip. I picked up a multi-piece travel spinning rod and went hunting for just the right pack.Enter the Kylebooker Fly Fishing Sling Pack. It's got a lot of great features at a good price, hopefully you'll find my review to have some good information and answers to questions that aren't found in the product description.THE GOOD:This pack holds more tackle than I expected! It's got several pockets and plenty of attachment points to help keep needed tools handy. I've tried to organize my thoughts to align with the pictures I took, so I'll take them in order:The first and second pictures show the front and back of the pack. I like how easy it is to locate the contrasting zipper pulls, and the zippers themselves operate smoothly. This is a crossbody bag. You can carry it casually with the strap over the left shoulder, but it's most secure over the head from right shoulder to left hip.As you can see in the third picture, the strap is well padded, and features a D-ring attachment point, a hook-and-loop patch (soft side), and a built-in tool zinger (coil type with a snap hook). This is in a sleeve to keep it from entangling with other items when it's not extended.Pictures 4-7 show the sleeve on the backside of the pack. It's about 12" on the diagonal. This is billed as a place to put the handle of your landing net. I may end up using it this way myself, if I decide I have the space to pack the net for my trip. The bottom end of the sleeve has three adjustable elastic tie-offs to help secure what's in the sleeve. I found this handy as I tested the fit of my travel rod in the sleeve (picture 7). I'm not entirely sure what to do with the other two tie-offs. Photos I've found show them as a place to hang fly-fishing tippet.Moving to the bottom of the pack, photos 8-9 show the water bottle holder. Again, it's got the elastic tie-off to keep it in place - I'd suggest a bottle that's about the diameter you'd put in the water bottle cage you'd find on a bicycle, as there's not a ton of stretch to the mesh pouch. The bottle in my pictures is 2.5" in diameter, and 9" long. Bottles with a "shoulder" will be more secure than ones that are one constant diameter, as the tie-off will have something to grab.Moving to the front of the pack, there's a slim pocket that would work well to hold a pack of hooks, a pair of braid scissors, or other small, flat items like a fishing license in a zipper-lock bag.If you swing the bag under your left arm to the front, the next pouch can be unzipped, and the sides of the pocket have gussets that limit the opening to 90 degrees to create a work surface. The inside of this pocket is soft, and the included hook-and-loop (rough side) fly patch was secured in here for shipping. This pocket is sized well for a Gamakatsu G-Box 3200 size, which are available in slit-foam (for hooks and jig heads) or divided compartment versions. The fly patch works well for small jig heads as well (like trout magnets, for instance), and can be relocated to the patch on the strap. From the side of the pack, there are two more zippered compartments. I was able to snugly fit two standard 3600-size tackle boxes along with one slim 3600, though for everyday use I'd prefer to keep it to just two boxes. I'm currently storing a Plano double-sided tackle organizer and several bags of soft-plastic lures in one section, and a single 3600 tray in the other.THE SO-SO:The bottom and side of the pack each have a pair of narrow black sleeves with holes. I haven't had a lot of success in figuring out what these are for. They're a bit too narrow to hold most of the tools I'd use. It's possible they intended for something like a thermometer with a pen clip, and I've seen some tool zingers that have a solid version of the sleeve that's on this pack's shoulder strap. Those seem to have a button to secure them, which might correspond to the holes in these sleeves. You can clip a small-diameter carabiner through the holes, and I'm going to try experimenting with attaching an elastic hair-tie or short ball-bungees like you'd use with a tarp to help secure a t-handled hook remover. The product description, Kylebooker's website, and other reviews never seem to make use of these sleeves. They're not a problem, exactly, but some guidance or examples would be welcome!OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT:This is a pack for the right-handed. If the buckle on the waist strap was able to be slid off, the pack would be able to used over the left shoulder, although this would leave all of the zippered side pockets and "work shelf" pocket pointing downwards.I'd also have loved to have some MOLLE or lash tab attachment points suitable to add a sheath for pliers or a knife. I may look into adding some of my own.I'm flying at the end of the month, so I'm hoping to be able to return with comments on how well the pack traveled and its overall usability!
